The new web DPI – bye bye pixels!

July 6th, 2010

15 or so years ago the web was a much simpler place.  A front end user’s browser sent requests to the server,  the server responded with some data which was presented on the screen.  Easy!   Then AJAX appeared which enabled people to do some more fancy stuff using asynchronous actions.    Now we are approaching HTML5 and CSS3 and with the new iPhone 4, the web is getting some more DPI lovin’.   It’s all about ‘Retina Display’ that’s used in Apple’s new gadget.   So, what is it?

Thanks to Retina display, everything you see and do on the iPhone 4 looks amazing.  Text in books, web pages and email are crisp at any size.  Images in movies and photos are stunning at almost any angle. Because the Retina display’s pixel density is so high, your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels.

The new display technology packs four times as many pixels into the same physical area on the display, resulting in a display that makes everything crystal clear. So what does it mean for our end-user?  Let’s have a look >>>

The web’s going to start looking a whole lot prettier….

8 most important on page SEO factors – part 2

July 5th, 2010

Continuing our series on ‘on-page seo’ and how it can help you, our man Kris C happily shares a few seo pointers with you.   This is an occasional  series to compliment our website work here at RKO.krisC-01

5. – Use the ‘no-follow’ attribute

Use the rel=”nofollow” tag in links to websites you do not trust.  It’s good practice to use ‘no-follow’ in comments and when you don’t want to pass any link power.

6. – Write valid code

Make sure that your code is valid, in some cases using invalid code you risk problems with proper page indexation .  Use the W3C validator to check your markup.

7. – Internal links structure

It’s good to create some deep links within your pages.  Deep linking is when you link to any page within the site that is not the main page.  Another important thing are anchors of these links,  they should be your keywords.  Put those links into context and you have strong internal links.

8. – Friendly url’s

Having keywords in your URL’s makes little difference to how well you rank in Google’s results.  This should be done also to encourage people to click.  Google ‘bolds’ keywords searched for in URLs in its results.

8 most important on page SEO factors – part 1

June 29th, 2010

While off-page factors are the core of today’s seo, we should remember that well optimised and well written webpages will be more likely to appear high in SERP’s (search engine results pages) than the non-optimized competition. The following list is only a sketch of the most important on-page factors.

krisC-01

Our man Kris C in the seo hot-seat brings you an occasional series to compliment our website work here at RKO.

1. – Domain name

When You consider a new domain name for your website it’s good practice to choose it with a connection to the keywords you want to target.  Yahoo pays significant attention to domain names when ranking pages.  For Google it is a less significant factor but it’s still easier to rank when you have some of your keywords in the domain name.  Besides, when somebody is looking for a keyword that is in your name it will get ‘bolded’, increasing its exposure and CTR (Click Thru Rate).

2. – Page titles

You should create titles individually for each page.  Don’t include only your company name here.   Think about 2 or 3 keywords that are most relevant to your page and put them into the title tag or provided field if you’re using a cms.  Be sure to give the greatest prominence to your main keyword.  Think about your title tag like a heading in a newspaper – it should be catchy, this will improve your CTR.

3. – Headings structure

Heading tags (H1 through to H6) are given more weight by Google, or any other search engine, than regular page text.  They should be used wisely to improve the page’s optimisation.  If you are not trying to rank well for a keyword, do not put it into an H1 tag.  It’s best to use the H1 tag only once per page – in the page or post title, this will allow search engines to understand what the page is about.  Tags from H2 to H6 can be used more than once but consider this to be reasonable.

4. – Unique content

You must make sure all of your pages contain unique content.  If your page contains only or mostly duplicated content you are risking not being included in Google search results, or worse, de-indexation!

5. – That’s it!
